All around the world many retailers are struggling with bigger chains and wondering how they can compete in order to stay in business.

Sadly a lot of them are blaming external circumstances like the economy, the government and the big business tycoons for making things bad for them.

If they’ve moved past the blame game they have reached a stage of confusion where they don’t know what to do and are desperate for results.

It’s this second group of people that are weighing in heavily in the “Which model is better: online or offline” debate and unfortunately that is the wrong question to ask.

There’s a simple question that all retailers should be asking themselves if they truly want to survive and thrive in business.

I shared my thoughts on this at the recent National Economic Development Conference here in Australia. Here’s my presentation from the conference where you will find out exactly what retailers should be focusing on.
